An evening with Eleanor Catton in Hokitika

Eleanor Catton, author of the Man Booker Prize winning novel, The Luminaries, will be in Hokitika on Thursday 13 March for a special one-off event.

The award-winning novel, which has been on the best-selling lists in New Zealand since its publication in August, is set in Hokitika during the 19th century gold rush. Catton has said she is delighted to be able to come to Hokitika to talk to readers.

Accompanying Catton will be her New Zealand publisher, Fergus Barrowman of Victoria University Press, and her UK publisher, Max Porter of Granta. Barrowman says that the event means a lot to both publishers.

‘To meet with West Coast readers will be wonderful experience. We’re all very excited about our visit to the coast and hearing Ellie speak about The Luminaries in its hometown.’

Catton will be in conversation with Max Porter for the hour-long session.

The event, ‘An evening with Eleanor Catton’, will be held at Hokitika’s Regent Theatre on Thursday 13 March. Doors will open at 5.30pm for a complimentary glass of wine or beer and refreshments. The event will begin at 6pm and run for approximately an hour. Tickets cost $20, $18 unwaged/seniors. Take Note Hokitika will be selling books on the night, and ticket holders will be able to get their books signed by Catton following the event. Tickets are available for purchase from Friday 20 December at the Hokitika’s Regent Theatre or online at www.hokitikaregent.com

Any profits from the evening will go towards Hokitika’s Regent Theatre.

The success of The Luminaries has seen Catton much in demand internationally and she has been overseas promoting and talking about the book to media and book festivals since the Man Booker Prize was announced in October. She will spend the best part of next year as a guest at literature festivals in Europe, Brazil, the USA and Canada.

‘An evening with Eleanor Catton’ is proudly organised by Victoria University Press, Take Note Hokitika and the Hokitika’s Regent Theatre.
