EL James cools down the raunch for next book

Fifty Shades of Grey author says new fiction will have much less sex, and probably another pseudonym

Raunch 'on the back burner' ... EL James

Readers hoping for more raunch from the queen of erotica EL James look set to be disappointed: the author has said that her next book will hold back on the sex.

Speaking at the Vanity Fair Oscar party, the author of the smash hit erotic trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey told the New York Post that her next novel "won't be nearly so raunchy – and I will probably write it under another name". The first novel in James's trilogy has sold more than six million copies in the UK, and was voted book of the year by the public in the National Book Awards in December.

James has previously told readers that "I'm looking forward to bringing you some new love stories I've got planned", and that she is unlikely to write another book about the hypersexed stars of Fifty Shades, Ana and Christian. "Never say never – but they're on the back burner at the moment, as I have a few other stories to tell first," she has written on her website.

But the millions of readers introduced to erotica by James's story of a dominant millionaire and a shy, retiring student need not fear. A new trilogy, which, likes James's, started life as fan fiction inspired by Twilight, has just been acquired by Headline. Tara Sue Me's Submissive Trilogy stars the "brilliant and handsome CEO" Nathaniel West, by night "a sexy and skilled dominant that is looking for a new submissive", and the librarian Abby, who is "yearning to experience a world of pleasure beyond her simple life".

"With over eight million reads online, [the] Submissive Trilogy is the original that inspired a new genre. It is now available in print for the first time," says the author on her website.
