David Walliams was among the winners of the inaugural People's Book Prize, which took place at London's Stationers Hall yesterday (21st July).
The People’s Book Prize launched last summer and was voted for exclusively by the public. Titles in three genres – fiction, non-fiction and children's literature – were showcased. A special prize, The Beryl Bainbridge Award, was introduced to honour the memory of the late author who was a founding patron of the prize.
Walliams was given the Children's Award for Mr Stink (HarperCollins). Kate Bostock from the Publishers Association accepted it on behalf of the author.
Meanwhile Brett Alegre-Wood won the Non-fiction prize for The 3+1 Plan (Delancey Press).
A Kind of Vanishing by Lesley Thomson (Myriad Editions) won best Fiction award, and The Beryl Bainbridge Award for a First Time Author went to Eerie Deirdre Darkly by Adam Perrott (Clementine Publishing).
Organisers - headed by Delancy Press m.d Tatiana Wilson - said The People's Book Prize would be "a tribute to Dame Beryl and her legacy".
