AN INVITATION TO MY NEW YORK READERS
- from my favourite village bookstore

Greetings from Three Lives & Company,
We hope you will be able to join us next week for a publication party and reception.

Luke Dempsey
A Supremely Bad Idea: Three Mad Birders and Their Quest to See It All

Tuesday, September 96.00 - 8.00 pm
Refreshments will be served.

In his first book, Luke Dempsey offers a hilarious account of his discovery of birding and his subsequent all-consuming mania for birds. Along with two friends, Luke travels about
America in search of birds and writes about his mad quest to add to his "life-list" and theoddball characters he meets along the way.

But you don't have to travel far to appreciate birding; Luke offers these interesting tidbits onbirding right here in New York City:-- Through out the year one can see almost 200 bird species in Central Park.--

Situated along the Eastern Flyway, an ancient course that funnels migrating birds, NewYork City see millions of birds make their way north in the spring and back south in thefall. Migrating shorebirds have already begun migrating south for the winter and songbirdswill begin migrating shortly.-- and you never know what might show up in NYC: a Western Reef-Heron found in WestAfrica, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf, and India was spotted in southern Brooklyn; earlier thisyear a Scott's Oriole, rarely seen east of central Texas, was seen for several weeks around theGhandi statue in Central Park; and, during the winter of 2004-2005 a Boreal Owl usually foundin the boreal forests of the far north was found in a tree near Tavern on the Green.

Luke Dempsey is editor in chief of Hudson Street Press, a division of Penguin, and lives in NewYork City.
