THE CLOTHES MAKE THE ELEPHANT

Four years ago, the Morgan Library & Museum acquired the early drafts, sketches, and watercolors for the first Babar book, Jean de Brunhoff’s “Histoire de Babar, le Petit Éléphant,” published in 1931.

Beginning Sept. 19, the library is putting on display a hundred and seventy-five works by Brunhoff and his son Laurent, who continued the series after his father’s death, in 1937. The exhibition also features the drafts of Laurent’s first effort, “Babar et Ce Coquin d’Arthur.”

A number of public events are planned, including a lecture about the French imagination by the New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik, on Nov. 6, and an illustrated talk by the exhibit’s curator, Christine Nelson, on Nov. 21. (Madison Ave. at 36th St. 212-685-0008. Through Jan. 4.)
