SUPERB NEW BOOK, SECOND IN SERIES
Hats off to Te Papa Press who continue to publish beautiful books that reach the very highest design standards.
Following the enormously successful Taiawhio: Conversations with Contemporary Maori Artist, (already in its third reprint), we now have book 2 in the series which features 18 "new conversations"
Huhana Smith, Megan Tamati-Quennell, Oriwa Solomon, and Awhina Tamarapa, all curators at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, conducted one-on-one interviews with the 18 artists featured whose work covers a wide range of art forms including weaving, painting, sculpture, carving, multimedia and jewellery.
With more than 10 pages of full-colour illustration for each artist alongside the insightful interviews the book is a knockout and a hugely valuable addition to the nation's published art history.
I was particularly interested to read about Sandy Adsett, (pictured left), and delighted to see the beautiful art he is creating, because years ago when I was bookselling in Napier he was teaching at Tairawhiti Polytechnic in Gisborne and it always amazed me at how often his name came up in conversation in my corner bookstore several hours drive to the south.
Congratulations to the publishers and the authors of this very fine book which has a New Zealand RRP of $70(including gst).
