Simon Master dies

Former Random House group deputy chairman Simon Master died suddenly on Friday (January 16th).

Master, who was 70, died while on holiday.

Master was deputy group chairman for Random House from 1989 to 2004 and previously worked at Pan, where he was editorial director, publishing director and m.d. in the 1970s and 1980s.
He served twice as president of the Publishers Association, from 1996-7 and from 2001-2, and was the inaugural chairman of the London Book Fair Advisory Board, a role he stepped down from in 2014.

LBF director Jacks Thomas said: "We are all in shock at the sad news of Simon’s death and still cannot quite believe it; we all held him in great affection. His contribution to The London Book Fair was immense and he continued to take a great interest after standing down as Non-Executive Chairman of our Advisory Board. Our thoughts are with [his wife] Georgie and his family."
Richard Mollet, c.e.o. of The Publishers Association, said the PA was "saddened" to hear of Master's passing. "Simon made a huge contribution to the publishing sector throughout his extensive career as a long serving member of various PA committees and  is among few publishers who assumed the role of President of The PA twice, 1996-7 and 2001-2. The PA’s thoughts are with Simon's family," he said.
