Blockbuster films such as The Hunger Games and The Twilight Saga are helping to fuel a resurgence in teenagers’ reading, research shows.
The young adult fiction market is booming, with book sales of £36.1million last year, an increase of 11 per cent on 2011.

The rise coincided with the last outing of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, as well as Jennifer Lawrence’s debut performance in The Hunger Games.

This compared to a 4 per cent decline in adult fiction to £397.5million in 2012.

Figures from Nielsen BookScan, which collates book sales worldwide, underline how crucial movie tie-ins are for publishers.

The top ten best-selling young adult fiction books in the UK since records began in 1998 is dominated by three authors who boast film adaptations – Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, Philip Pullman, who wrote the His Dark Materials trilogy, and The Hunger Games writer Suzanne Collins.
Ms Meyer shifted around 8.5 million copies of these books from the Twilight saga in the UK and made more than £48million worth of sales.
The only British author in the list is Philip Pullman, whose His Dark Materials trilogy, takes fifth, sixth and seventh positions, shifting more than four million copies and over £25million worth of sales.
The Golden Compass, a film based on the first book, Northern Lights, was released in 2007, starring Nicole Kidman.
Suzanne Collins takes up the rest of the list for her trilogy - The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mocking Jay - selling more than 2.5million copies and amassing about £13million worth of sales.
Overall, the value of this market has almost doubled from £18,532,356 in 2006 to £36,146,205 in 2012, the data shows.
