Donna Tartt, author of the wildly popular cult classic "The Secret History" and "The Little Friend," takes her time: To date, she's published a book about once a decade. So, when it was announced that the enigmatic author would be releasing a new book this fall, her fans exploded with anticipation.
Bookish has the exclusive first look at the cover for "The Goldfinch," which will be published October 2013 and sounds like J.D. Salinger's New York meets Peter Carey's "Theft," with a hefty dose of Tartt's trademark intrigue. Read on for exclusive insight into the book and its cover design from her editor.

From Donna Tartt's editor:
"Like Donna Tartt's previous novels "The Secret History" and "The Little Friend," "The Goldfinch" is built around an enormous mystery while at the same time exploring the deepest moral and philosophical questions. The cover suggests a central moment in the story, which I can't give away here!"

From the publisher's description:"A young boy in New York City, Theo Decker, miraculously survives an accident that takes the life of his mother. Alone and abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by a friend’s family and struggles to make sense of his new life. In the years that follow, he becomes entranced by one of the few things that reminds him of his mother: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the art underworld."

Donna Tartt was born in Greenwood, Miss., and is a graduate of Bennington College. She is the author of the novels "The Secret History" and "The Little Friend." She lives in New York.
