In coincidence with the 70th anniversary of the start of World War II, How we saw the war revisits newspapers and other media to tell the story of the war years through the eyes of New Zealand. From Michael Joseph Savage’s ‘Where Britain goes, we go’ declaration of war in 1939 through the Japanese surrender in 1945, How We Saw the War sets out for today's readers how the war unfolded not so long ago.

Ron Palenski is one of New Zealand’s most experienced and prolific writers. His many books include the lives of All Blacks Jeff Wilson, Graham Mourie and Dave Loveridge and Olympic gold medalist John Walker. He has a master's degree in history and has long had an interest in the social and personal stories of New Zealand’s involvement in war.
He has written a number of newspaper stories on the topic, including one marking the centenary of Lord Freyberg’s birth which drew warm commendation from the general’s son.
