INTERNATIONAL WRITING PROGRAM,

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA WRITERS’ RESIDENCY 2009

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Creative New Zealand is calling for applications for the International Writing Program, University of Iowa Writers’ Residency 2009. The result of a partnership between Creative New Zealand and the University of Iowa, the Residency provides a unique opportunity for a New Zealand writer to live and work at the University of Iowa in the United States and participate in its International Writing Program.

The Program brings established writers of the world to the University of Iowa, where they become part of the lively literary community on campus. Founded in 1967, the Program was the first international writers’ residency at a university, and it remains unique in world literature. Over the years, more than 1000 writers from more than 100 countries have completed residencies in the Program.

Previous recipients of the Residency include: Gordon McLauchlan, Vivienne Plumb, James Norcliffe, Penelope Todd and Brian Falkner. The Arts Board has recently increased its investment in this residency which will provide a larger stipend in US$ for the recipient of an equivalent of NZ$2,000 per month.

The primary aim of the Residency is for the recipient to work on an approved project while in Iowa. On returning, the recipient will be expected to have completed, or substantially completed, a body of writing, and should be able to demonstrate other tangible benefits to New Zealand literature. Participants in the Program are given periods of unstructured time to work on their own writing projects but some afternoons will feature literary activities (including the opportunity to participate in panel discussions and readings), excursions and field trips.

The Residency runs from approximately August to November 2009 and provides return travel to Iowa, assistance with living expenses and accommodation in Iowa House, situated on the campus of the University of Iowa.

Eligibility

The Residency is suitable for nationally recognised writers of fiction, poetry, drama, children’s fiction, screenplays, biography or cultural commentary who have previously published at least one volume of work. Applicants should be interested in interaction with writers from diverse cultures.
