The ongoing resurgence of te reo Māori went global with the 2017 release
of the reo-Māori version of Disney’s Moana. It isn’t uncommon today to
hear everyday greetings, farewells and introductions in Māori used on
mainstream television and radio and this year the Government made a commitment
to integrate te reo Māori into every ECE, primary and intermediate school by
2025.
It has been 30 years since te reo Māori was declared an official
language of New Zealand, and now we are enjoying the peak of the renaissance
with more and more New Zealanders embracing, learning and using our indigenous
language.

Hēmi Kelly is of Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāti Tahu-Ngāti Whāoa descent. He
is a full-time lecturer in te reo Māori at the Auckland University of
Technology.
Hēmi is a licensed translator and a graduate of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo, the Institute of Excellence in the Māori Language.
In 2017, Hēmi translated Witi Ihimaera’s novella in Sleeps Standing. A Māori Word a Day is his first book.
