TRAILBLAZING Kiwi physician Rosamund Vallings
continues her quest to demystify a debilitating illness affecting tens of
thousands of New Zealanders with her new book, The Pocket Guide to
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME.
Internationally recognised for her pioneering work, Dr
Vallings has over three decades of experience in the field of ME/CFS and is one
of the world’s leading experts in the disorder characterized by
extreme fatigue.
Affecting more people in New Zealand than either multiple
sclerosis or motor neurone disease, CFS is
a complex illness that affects many systems of the body, particularly the
nervous and immune systems.
Rutherford Medal winner and Professor of Biochemistry
Warren Tate described the book as a
valuable pocket guide that collects together very helpful information in a
format that is easily accessible – at time when science is revealing more about
the disease.
Hailing Dr Vallings as both a
‘stellar health practitioner’ and ‘outstanding New Zealander’, the Professor
praised her support for CFS/ME patients; helping them manage day-to-day this
unexplained long-term condition.
“Dr Vallings is a brilliant communicator in her many
talks and workshops spanning the public, medical students, senior health
practitioners, and the health research community. She is the national expert on
the illness at all levels and regularly reports on the latest research findings
presented at international conferences – important today as the biological
basis of the illness is now slowly being revealed,” said
Tate.
With her encyclopedic knowledge of the illness, Dr
Vallings uses her new book to simplify and explain
everything for sufferers and carers alike; offering guidance to manage symptoms
and improve overall wellbeing.
Featuring the latest research and search for a
cure, The Pocket Guide to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME offers
strategies for dealing with specific symptoms, managing sleep, easing back into
exercise, eating optimally for recovery and dealing with work and education
issues.
It also offers guidance on talking to others about
CFS/ME, including the doctor; caring for CFS/ME sufferers, including the
severely ill (at its most extreme sufferers can be bed-ridden and require
24-hour care).
Dr Vallings previous books, Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome/ME: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Management and Managing
ME/CFS: A Guide for Young People have helped thousands of people
around the world.
In 2016 she was the recipient of the Nelson Gantz
Award for Outstanding Clinician by the International Association for CFS/ME. Dr
Vallings has also been awarded Membership of the New Zealand Order of Merit for
services to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and was nominated as New Zealand Woman of
the Year in 2008.
Living in Auckland, Dr Vallings travels regularly to
promote understanding of CFS/ME and to further her interest in the latest
research into diagnosis and treatments.
