The Hoppleplop

Would you like to see a Hoppleplop?
Well, just open the door and come inside.
But quietly now...

Addressing the reader directly, the writer invites us into his house in search of an elusive Hoppleplop. As each door is opened to reveal a strange, new creature dwelling in this 'normal' house, the reader begins to build a mental image of the Hoppleplop, with its big feet, big bum, long nose and even longer ears. But nothing is quite as it seems.

The final reveal is guaranteed to inspire gasps of surprise... and cries of "read it again!"

This new edition of The Hoppleplop contains text from the author around his inspiration for the story. The illustrator shares her process in developing the characters and the world they inhabit.

Kyle Mewburn: about the author

Kyle is one of New Zealand's most eclectic and prolific writers. His 50+ titles have been published in twenty-seven countries and won numerous awards including NZ Children's Book of the Year. His work ranges from multi-layered picture books Old Hu-hu, Kiss!Kiss! Yuck!Yuck! and Hill & Hole to gross, laugh-out-loud junior fiction Dragon Knight and Dinosaur Rescue series. Melu, the story of a stubborn mule’s quest to reach the glittering, green sea, won the 2014 Children’s Choice award, while his most recent picture book, The house on the hill, a spooky homage to Edgar Allan Poe, has been shortlisted in both the Picture Book and Children’s Choie categories at this year’s NZ Book Awards.  

He was the Children's Writer in Residence at Otago University in 2011 and is currently President of the New Zealand Society of Authors.

Deborah Hinde: about the illustrator

Deborah worked as a graphic designer before turning her hand to illustration. After years of working with advertising agencies, publishers and manufacturers she was given the opportunity to illustrate children’s picture books. The Hoppleplop was the second book Deborah illustrated. Her first, A Kiwi Night Before Christmas was first published in 2003, and has now become a New Zealand classic.
Since 2003, Deborah has illustrated another 28 books including the award winning Te Reo Singalong series and the popular and fun counting books: 10 Kooky Kiwi, 10 Goofy Geckos and 10 Plucky Penguins.
She still considers the illustrations for The Hoppleplop some of her best work.
