View from my desk
When I joined MKWC last December, the 2015 University of Auckland resident, Rochelle Bright, was in the last month of her six-month residency; a week or so ago the 2016 University of Auckland resident, Vivienne Plumb, arrived at the Centre. Thus I have come to the end of the cycle of the four residencies we offer annually.
In 2016 we welcomed four writers from the greater Wellington region. For the summer and autumn residents, Hannah August and Elspeth Sandys, the Waitemata sparkled and shone. Briar Grace-Smith’s time at Signalman’s House has been buffeted by wind and rain but she kept snug in the writing studio.
Our two youth development projects, the Young Writers Programme and the Poetry Project, are almost at the end of the workshop component. You can read updates from the co-ordinators later in this newsletter. Submissions for YWP alumni for our annual publication Signals are now open, learn about the conditions below.
The events programme continues under the steady and inspired direction of Lynn Dawson, chair of the MKWC Friends. Read what you’ve missed and what you shouldn’t miss.
We have a stunning line-up of writers for the annual residential workshop Writing New Zealand: People, Politics and Place which will be held at Labour weekend. Links to the programme and draft application form can be found below.
With a full range of activities happening in and around MKWC Tania and I have very little time for filing our nails and schmoozing with the literati.
I’ve enjoyed sharing the view with you and providing a glimpse of the activities associated with the Michael King Writers’ Centre.
I bid you farewell and thank you for your continuing support for the Centre’s work.
