It's hard to imagine that too many economists in Australia will receive Christmas cards from book publishers this year. A long campaign of lobbying, culminating with the recent Harper review into competition policy, has resulted in the Commonwealth government deciding to remove restrictions on the parallel importation of books. The Conversation
Jesus, why do the tired comments keep getting pulled out? Parallel importation has not dropped book prices in NZ. Economists keep using this as a justification for their nirvana (open markets) but it doesn't work. All they are doing is telling authors they are not allowed any control who supplies their work, and placing their market at a disadvantage against closed markets such as the US and Europe.
