Writers William Trevor and Edna O'Brien have been conferred the honour of Saoi by Ireland's president Michael D Higgins, a honour previously bestowed on Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney.

The Saoi  – literally “wise one” – is awarded for singular and sustained distinction in the creative arts.

President Higgins paid tribute to Trevor as “a writer of world renown, of great distinction, of towering achievements, of elegance and grace”. He said O’Brien was a “fearless teller of truth” who has continued to write “undaunted, sometimes by culpable incomprehension, authoritarian hostility and sometimes downright malice”.
