The £5,000 Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year award was presented tonight to Horatio Clare for Down to the Sea in Ships (Vintage), his lyrical account of the tough trade of container shipping.Clare travelled as a "supernumerary" — part of the company but not the crew — with the giant Maersk Lines. He says he thought he was joining a cargo ship to find out about ships and oceans, and a miracle of supply that landlubbers take for granted.
