Cricketing Colonists: The Brittan brothers in early
Canterbury
by Geoffrey Rice & Frances Ryman
William
Guise Brittan and his elder brother Joseph were leading figures in the
Canterbury settlement, as well as being cricket enthusiasts. Yet they were
unpopular, both their careers ended in failure and disappointment, and they
have been mostly forgotten. This fascinating account seeks to explain why this
was, exploring their work and family lives, and along the way provides a richly
detailed panorama of life and politics in early Christchurch.
