Depot Press opens submissions for upcoming issue of The Vernacularist.

 The Vernacularist Urban-Rural: The Great Divide?

 Call for submissions

Depot Press has now opened submissions for the upcoming issue of The Vernacularist. The Vernacularist is a provocative publication celebrating/exploring the vernacular identity of Aotearoa New Zealand. Themes chosen for The Vernacularist are generally topical and deliberately open to interpretation in order to encourage creative and diverse submissions of relevance to Aotearoa New Zealand's unique physical, cultural, social and ecological environment.

The upcoming issue is themed Urban-Rural: The Great Divide?  and arises from recent reporting around this perceived dichotomy which has tended to reinforce simplistic, often historic, stereotypes.

Original content (can be in any medium suitable for print) exploring perceptions of the urban-rural divide, or investigating/expressing ideas, concerns, and associations, will be considered for this unique publication.

Our editor for this issue is Louise Evans, who first became involved with the Depot in 2008 shortly after moving to Auckland from Motukaraka in the Hokianga. Louise is a musician, organiser of creative projects and events from community radio to ceilidhs and a passionate champion of community engagement in the arts. Her long term vision is to return to the Far North to live and to develop a rural arts advocacy for the area.

 About The Submission Process

The aim of the submissions call-out is to gather written and visual content that will create an enticing, textured, highly readable and thought provoking publication. We are looking for fresh perspectives, visions, stories, and profiles of people or places.

You do not have to be an expert or an academic to contribute. Quiet or bold, anything will be considered. Successful submissions will be selected on the strength of relevance to the theme of the issue (Urban-Rural: The Great Divide?), and overall fit with other submissions and content.

Please note: If your submission is accepted, you are licensing the content of your submission to the Depot Artspace and Depot Press for publishing in The Vernacularist in both print and online form and for use in any subsequent promotion.

If you do not want to personally submit, but have suggestions of people, groups, initiatives, places or issues you believe to be a good fit with the theme, we also welcome you to contact us.

Guidelines

•         All content must be original (you must own the copyright) and be accompanied by a 2-3 line bio about you as a contributor.

•         Written submissions should not exceed 1000 words. You are encouraged to include images to accompany written work. All styles of writing are considered.

•         Images should be large enough for print (300dpi).

•         Photos should be accompanied by captions or titles along with the date and/place created. Social/ snapshot/vernacular photography is accepted, (e.g. images from social media platforms) provided it is your own work.

•         Artwork should be accompanied with the title, medium and any other relevant information.

•         Artwork and writing must not have been published previously.

•         Any submission created specifically for the publication will be prioritised.
