Re-inventing New Zealand: riding the waves of change

During our lifetimes we have seen New Zealand pass through an extraordinary series of changes and re-inventions. When I was growing up in the 1950s, the country still felt like a British colony.  It was then transformed by many influences - such as American culture, corporate capitalism, the Māori renaissance, the women’s movement, gay rights, Pacific Island cultures, links with Australia, links with Asia - and now we are being re-invented once again by the digital revolution. The speed of change seems heightened by the small size of our country.
What do we make of all these changes – and, in particular, what have they meant for the arts?
Roger HorrocksRoger Horrocks has been involved in many areas of the arts – a poet, film-maker, biographer (of artist Len Lye), curator, opera librettist, and for 35 years a lecturer in English and Film Studies at the University of Auckland. He is a Member of the NZ Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to film and television. He holds the Autumn Residency at the Michael King Writers’ Centre to write a book about the evolution of the arts in New Zealand. If you’ve heard him on radio, on the screen, or in the lecture room, you’ll know he is a lively and engaging speaker!
