On the Move - Garth Barfoot - Business leader, triathlete, recipient of MNZM for services to business, sport and the community

Garth Barfoot is a remarkable New Zealander who has applied his immense determination to achieving success in both the real estate world and the triathlon field. On the Move follows Garth’s life-long journey as he tackles the lows and celebrates the highs of business life, relationships and sporting challenges.

After qualifying from university, Garth made his way up the ranks of the family real estate business, Barfoot & Thompson. At the age of 30 he became a director and has since overseen the company’s growth to more than 2000 staff.

His business success has seen him feature regularly in the NBR’s Rich List, yet his wealth has not altered his lifestyle. Greatly respected within the industry for his strong moral compass and honesty, he still lives in the same family home he bought 45 years ago and regularly donates his time, as well as funds, to charities and sporting events.

When he was 56, Garth competed in his first triathlon – he doggie-paddled during the swim and borrowed a bike, but has gone on to compete in more than 30 Iron distance triathlons all over the world, including the iconic Kona World Championship Ironman, and at 77 he held the ITU Long Distance World Champion for his age group. At 78, and after recovering from a broken hip gained during a training ride near his home, Garth is due to defend that title in Weihai, China just as this book is being released. He has recently competed in the World Ironman 70.3 championships in Mont Tremblant, Quebec – that was his warm up!

Filled with Garth’s tips on leadership and amusing sporting anecdotes On the Move will ultimately inspire all who read it.

About the author:
CUSHLA INNES studied Communication at Auckland University of Technology and currently works as a freelance writer. Before undertaking this book she contributed to a number of publications
including Alpinesport, NZ Skier, Forward 50 and the New Zealand Herald.
Cushla first met Garth 30 years ago through the Alpine Sports Club, a tramping and skiing club for which they have a similar affinity, and found they had a shared interest in real estate and triathlon.
Then in 2012, after interviewing Garth for newspaper articles, Cushla approached him with a view to ghost-writing his autobiography.
She believed that his life story was fascinating and deserved to be shared, and found working with him inspiring because of his modesty, affability and storytelling skills. She says ‘He is one of life’s great characters and I admire him enormously.’
