Book of the Week: ‘The Restless Supermarket’ by Ivan Vladislavić


One of my favorite lines in 20th-century literature is the second sentence in Mario Vargas Llosa’s Conversation in the Cathedral, in which one of the main characters, Santiago, looks out from a doorway and wonders, “At what precise moment had Peru fucked itself up?” 

The book, which takes place and explores life in Peru under the dictatorship of Manuel A. Odría in the 1950s, examines where things went wrong in the country and region during that tumultuous period, while also looking to the past when things were different.
