Ralph Miller was a highly talented Dunedin artist who died in 1956 at the young age of 37, but left over 1000 sketches and artwork that has been kept in the family for decades; some artwork is in galleries. A wide selection of Ralph Miller’s sketches and paintings are reproduced and presented within the context of his life story and the events and people who influenced him. This book for the first time shows the quality and extent of his work, which now has real historical value.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Miller family and Miller Studios (the family signwriting/design business that celebrated its centenary in 2013) are discussed as Ralph’s earliest influences.
- A chapter is devoted to the Dunedin art scene and some of the people who were influential, either as artists or tutors.
- A short description of World War 2 in the Pacific is included as a background to Ralph’s life at that stage and the development of his art during that period.
- He was mainly self-taught during WW2, but studied a wide range of artists and had tuition before and after WW2.
- Post-war suburban life in the 1940s – 1950s was a productive time for his art and several of his Dunedin street-scenes from this last period of his life are reproduced in full-colour, along with short articles that background each piece.
