Star Won't Go Out' Celebrates a Young Life Esther Earl, to whom John Green dedicated The Fault in Our Stars, died of thyroid cancer in 2010 at the age of 16. She was an exceptionally bright and talented young woman who inspired many with her hopefulness, generosity, and empathy. January 28 will see the publication of This Star Won't Go Out: The Life and Words of Esther Grace Earl, which compiles the teenager's journals, letters, fiction, sketches, and many family photographs. more

Query to Book Deal in 72 Hours It's a true story that reads like fiction – and it's one that should raise the spirits of any aspiring author. Elise Parsley, a 27-year-old piano teacher living in Plymouth, Minn., leapt from being an unpublished, agentless author-illustrator to one with both an agent and a book contract in three days. The quick-fire timeline went like this: Parsley sent Steven Malk at Writers House an e-mail query on Tuesday, November 19; he signed her on as a client on Wednesday, and on Thursday submitted her picture book, If You Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, Don't!, to multiple publishers. more

American Group Buys Entire Christmas Display
It sounds like a variation of the bar joke: a customer walks into a store and.... But in this case, it was no joke. A customer representing the education department of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians walked into Barnes & Noble in Spanish Fort, Ala., and bought an entire display in the children's section. As a result, nearly 500 children in the tribe will receive at least one new book this holiday season. more
