One of the finest surviving copies of the first book printed in what is now the United States of America will go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in New York.
The Congregationalist Puritans who emigrated to Massachusetts Bay in search of religious freedom translated and produced a version of the Book of Psalms.
The first edition was printed in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1640, and Sotheby’s will auction one of the 11 surviving copies. The book has a pre-sale estimate of $15/30m.
