Successful
writers all, these three creative women have among them authored five novels.
Their other achievements include visual design, journalism and several
prestigious literary fellowships. A conversation among these writers is sure
to be intriguing.
Sarah
Laing is
the current writer in residence at the Michael King Writers’ Centre. She
holds the six-month University of Auckland Residency. She also held a short
residency at the centre in 2008, when she completed her novel Dead People’s Music.
Her latest novel The
Fall of the Light was published this year and her new
multi-genre project is a graphic novel, part memoir and part biography, about
her fascination with Katherine Mansfield. Of her work she has said: "I
... love pretending to be an analyst, trying to figure out motivations for
people's peculiar behaviour.”

Bianca
Zander has
written for newspapers including the The New Zealand Listener, Sunday Star Times,
and Dominion
Post, produced radio shows and written for film and
television. In 2009, she wrote the short film The Handover,
which screened in competition at the Chicago Film Festival. She teaches
creative writing at AUT. Her first novel The Girl Below
was published in 2012 and she has a new novel The Predictions
due out soon.
Sue
Orr has
worked as a journalist, contract writer and speech writer. Her first
book, Etiquette
for a Dinner Party: Short Stories, was published in
2008. It won the Lilian Ida Smith Award and was listed in the NZ Listener’s
Top 100 Books of 2008. Her second book, From Under the Overcoat,
was published in 2011, was a finalist in the NZ Post Book Awards that year
and won the People's Choice Award. Her work has been published in anthologies
and journals. She teaches creative writing at MIT in Manukau.
