A Long Apprenticeship: Thomas Gainsborough's Early Work

In this illustrated presentation, visiting British specialist Hugh Belsey looks at the early work of Thomas Gainsborough. Gainsborough was one of England's leading portrait painters in the 18th century, and his work is featured in Angels & Aristocrats.

Hugh Belsey is Senior Research Fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, London. He is an internationally recognised expert on Gainsborough and is currently completing the definitive catalogue of his portraits. This work has brought him to New Zealand.
