Last week 11 elderly publishers and the young Kevin
Chapman enjoyed an evening of gossip, reminiscence, soulful nostalgia and good
food at the lovely Oriental Bay apartment of Ann Mallinson.
At Ann’s kind
invitation a bunch of Honorary Life Members of PANZ – Ray and Barbara Richards,
David and Sue Heap, Rosemary Stagg, Helen Benton and Bob Ross, David Elworthy
and Ros Henry, Elizabeth Caffin and a stray economist – caught up with the
times and with each other. None was more lively than nonagenarian Ray Richards
to whom, as Bob Ross recalled in paying him tribute, the industry owes the
founding of the BPANZ many years ago.
Kevin was specially imported to talk
about Frankfurt which he did with passion and aplomb. Inevitably ebooks were
discussed. David Bateman and Gerard Reid were remembered with affection. To be
repeated, perhaps in Auckland . . .
