THE TRIBE: The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf
by Ambelin Kwaymullina
Walker Books Australia are very excited about The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf, the
first book in a trailblazing new series called The Tribe, published this
month.
Written by talented newcomer Ambelin Kwaymullina, Ashala Wolf delivers equal parts
gripping psychological thriller, thought-provoking dystopia and star-crossed love
story, and links them together with subtle undertones referencing Ambelin’s
Indigenous heritage.
Set in a world where civilisation has been destroyed by an environmental
catastrophe called The Reckoning, the first book in the series begins three
hundred years after this cataclysmic event. A new world has arisen with no war,
no poverty and no hunger. There are also people with abilities – Firestarters,
Rumblers and Sleepwalkers – who the Government, obsessed with keeping The
Balance, label “Illegals”.
Exploring themes of spiritual wisdom, the importance of our connection
to the environment and social inequality, with unsettling parallels to our
present, The
Interrogation of Ashala Wolf will have readers hooked from
the first page.
Ambelin (left), a successful lawyer, lecturer and illustrator, hopes The Tribe
will be a series that both entertains and provokes discussion. “The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf is
the kind of book I like to read myself – full of mystery, tension and romance,
but also one that asks a bigger question about the nature of human societies
and the world,” she says.
“In my writing
I love to ask ‘what if’, to imagine both the great and terrible things humanity
could do. I like to think that the best instinct of the human species will
triumph in the end, and we will forge a future world that is kinder and more
just than the one we have now.”
The Interrogation of
Ashala Wolf will be supported by a major marketing campaign,
including a dedicated microsite www.thefirstwood.com.au,
