THE UNTOLD PICTURE-BOOK SUCCESS STORY
Demolition picks up where the success of their first joint picture book Roadworks
left off. An international phenomenon, Roadworks won the NZ Post
Picture Book of the Year Award (2009), sold over 100,000 copies worldwide and became one of
Walker Books Australia and New Zealand ’s
most successful international exports to the U.S. market.
An unlikely a pairing as any other – Sally, a successful children’s
author and playwright who once lived in the Arizona Desert, and Brian, an
accomplished illustrator and Auckland-based geothermal engineer – bring Demolition
to full colour in a deliciously onomatopoeic and finely detailed homage to all
things heavy, noisy and boisterous.
Sally, speaking from her home in Birkenhead, Auckland , explains that her motive behind
creating Roadworks came from seeing a gap in the market for plot-driven
books about machines.
“I noticed the shortage of good ‘machine’ books for boys on the market.
Many books had lots of description, and lots of noise, but not much plot: most
of the activity seemed to have very little purpose.
I wanted to write a book where a process was seen being completed to the
end. I also wanted to make the text rhythmic and pleasurable to read (not least
for machine-bored parents!) – and I wanted my little girl to have fun reading
it too.”
Parents can now breathe a collective sigh of relief worldwide as Demolition
caters perfectly for the machine-mad, crash-tumbling noisy little readers
for whom cuddly animals will not suffice.
A book to entertain, inspire and educate – featuring a pictorial
glossary of the machines with information for children to pore over – Demolition
is another sure-fire hit for this talented duo, and will be a must-have on
every bookshelf this year.
Demolition will be launched at the Auckland National Library Centre on Thursday 8th March 2012
Date: Thursday 8th March 2012
