Euan Macleod and Gregory O’Brien at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery

Euan Macleod and Gregory O’Brien exhibition The sea and where it was we went at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery in conjunction with Words on a Small Island The Waiheke Book Festival 2011.
Join Euan Macleod and Gregory O’Brien at the Gala Opening on Friday 4 November and for an Artist Presentation in the gallery at midday 12.00PM on Saturday 5 November.

Euan Macleod originally from New Zealand, now lives and works in Sydney.  Macleod was the winner of the prestigious Archibald Prize for portraiture. . He won the Sulman Prize for best subject painting in 2001 and the Blake Prize for Religious Art in 2006.
His paintings and drawings feature in prominent public and private collections throughout Australia and overseas including the National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Chartwell Collection.
He produces dark, expressive paintings. The heavily textured surfaces are literally scraped, the gritty oil paint smeared across the canvas. Out of muted colours, Macleod shapes people and landscapes. A looming figure with long limbs often divides the picture. A vertiginous cliff is sometimes delineated by a rough, raw brushstroke. These are tough masculine paintings. There is a brutal honesty to the work which at times can be quite confronting.
Formerly a senior curator at City Gallery Wellington, Gregory O'Brien is a poet, essayist, and artist.  His most recent book, Euan MacLeod: the Painter and the Painting will be featured alongside the gallery exhibitions and at the book festival.
The festival exhibition open from 6 October  to 14 November.  7 Days 10AM – 4PM   at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery, Korora Road, Oneroa Auckland.
