Saturday book purchases

Knowing my fondness for cookbooks no one will be surprised that my regular weekend visit to the marvellous Village Bookshop at Matakana saw me leaving with two cookbooks Saturday morning.

RUMP & A ROUGH RED
Greg Duncan Powell
Murdoch Books- NZ$37

I read the author's potted bio on the back inside cover of this book which reads - Greg Duncan Powell lives and works from a house perched on a hill overlooking the sea on the New South Wales south coast. He tastes wine for a living, occasionally writes books and won't let his beloved wife near the kitchen. A father of three small children, he is also a surfer, windsurfer, musician, part-time tree surgeon, and complains that his life is stressful and very busy.

I immediately liked him and decided I must own his book. Having now spent the afternoon reading the book, and the one that follows, I am pleased with my purchase.
Each chapter focuses on a single classic ingredient - the grape, the olive, the legume, the chicken, the pig, the sheep, the cow, the vegetable, the lemon etc -  and different ways to cook and serve it, always with an eye to thrift and flavour, and the glass of wine he recommends with the dish. The first thing I am going to make is from the legumes chapter - baked beans the old way.

Also pleased with the second purchase:

TANGERINE DREAM CAFE- A  YEAR IN CHELSEA PHYSIC GARDEN
Limpet Barron, David Hughes, Sarah Charles
Chelsea Physic Garden - NZ$40

This book comprises 150 pages of beautiful garden and food photography through the seasons, the photographs by Sarah Charles.
Packed with utterly gorgeous photos it is a special record of the physic garden a hidden sanctuary in the heart of Chelsea between the Thames and Royal Hospital Road, London.
David Hughes and Limpet Barron co-own Tangerine Dream Cafe and are the chefs that create the wonderful lunch menus for which it is so highly regarded. Many of the cafe recipes are included in the book. I especially like the look of the lamb cutlets and Greek salad, kedgeree, salmon en croute, and summer pudding and as we will be in London next month we plan to visit to try the food and visit the gardens which are open to the public between April and October.
