Travcom Award Winner - New Zealand Landscapes: Northland to Antarctica

Last night, Wellington photographer and publisher Grant Sheehan won the Travcom 2011 Pictorial Travel Book of the Year Award for New Zealand Landscapes: Northland to Antarctica published by Phantom House Books.

Travcom is a not-for-profit association of travel writers, photographers, broadcasters and travel-related communicators involved in promoting a high standard of travel writing, photography and publishing in New Zealand and internationally. Travcom organises the annual Cathay Pacific Travel Media awards and the Whitcoulls Travcom Travel Book Award to reinforce the aim of encouraging good standards of travel writing and photography.

The pictorial travel book award recognises excellence in the following areas:

• Photography – consistency and quality of the photography

• How well the entrant has used photography to illustrate their concept in the context of a book

• Book Design – how well the story has been constructed and told

• Creativity – originality and creativity used when designing the physical elements of the book – cover, construction, format

• Presentation – quality and craftsmanship.

New Zealand Landscapes: Northland to Antarctica is a photographic celebration of New Zealand's diverse and very often impressive landscape. Grant Sheehan has recorded his own camera views from Northland to Stewart Island and beyond, to New Zealand's Antarctic territory and her islands in the Southern Ocean. From the road, from the air and at sea, the tranquility and scope of open, often remote, spaces are captured. The scenery and wildlife shown here underlines why New Zealand is consistently on the global 'must-see' list.

As an extra dimension, the images have been given a striking 40 minute soundtrack written especially for the book by Wellington composer Rhian Sheehan, winner of 2010 Qantas Award for Best Original Score(The Cult).

Grant Sheehan is an award winning Wellington-based photographer and publisher. His photographs have featured in magazines and newspapers such as Condé Nast Traveller and the New York Times, and in over 20 books, including Landmarks-Historic Buildings of New Zealand; Cafés of the World, the internationally successful A Place to Stay – Hotels of the World series and Planet Penguin. He has twice won the New Zealand Travel Photographer of the Year Award (2002 and 2008), with images from international assignments.

"Sheehan's landscapes are not the sort you find on postcards; instead, he picks out rich colours and textures: lichen on a fence, crops in a field, layers in rock, reflections in water, clouds soaring in the sky. He captures the atmosphere of a place more than recording its landmarks." - Grace Dalley
