Jason Steger - March 17, 2011
It's been a significant couple of weeks for Melbourne writer Jon Bauer. First, he got confirmation of his Australian citizenship after living here for 11 years. Then, Rocks in the Belly was named best first novel of last year by independent booksellers. Yesterday, his book was longlisted for Australia's premier literary award, the Miles Franklin.
''I am so excited that it's happened in the same month as my citizenship,'' he said. ''I would never have found writing if I hadn't come to live in Australia.''
The shortlist will be announced on April 19 and, for the first time, the award will be presented in Melbourne, on June 22. This year's prize money has increased to $50,000.
