Author Michele Roberts is to chair the 2011 judging panel for the Jane Austen Short Story Award.

The competition is for short fiction inspired by Austen, with the winner scooping £1,000 and a week's writer's retreat at Chawton House, an Elizabethan mansion once owned by Jane Austen's brother, in Alton, Hampshire.

Two runners-up will receive £200 plus a week's writer's retreat.
The three winners and 17 other shortlisted stories will be published as an anthology by indie publishers Honno. HarperCollins bought US rights to the collection of winning entries from 2009, Dancing with Mr Darcy.

Roberts has written 12 novels, including Daughters of the House (Virago) which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 1992. Her collection Mud: Stories of Sex and Love (Virago) was published in 2010.

The closing date for this year's competition is 31st March.
