Danielle Steele Denies Being a Romance Author

By Maryann Yin on  GalleyCat, Sep 23, 2010

During an interview with CBS News, Danielle Steele refused to label her books as "romance novels." Her interviewer pointed out several "romance novel" characteristics found in many of her titles; she still insists they do not belong in the genre.

The author has a bibliography listing 113 titles and continues to write constantly. She usually publishes 3 books a year. Right now, she has two novels in development. Adult fiction aside, she has also written non-fiction, poetry, and children's books.

Steele claims: "They're not really about romance. It's an element in life. But I think of romance novels as more of a category, and I write about the situations we all deal with. Loss and war and illness and jobs and careers, and good things, bad things, crimes, whatever. And I really write more about the human condition." (Via the Guardian)
