Haddon joins Rowling and Brown as decade's top Dog
14.12.09 Victoria Gallagher in The Bookseller
Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (Vintage) is the only non-J K Rowling or Dan Brown title to clinch a top 10 spot in the bestselling books of the decade.
The Whitbread winner has taken 10th position overall, thanks to sales of 2.1m across its many adult/children’s editions.
Brown managed to fight off competition from seven Harry Potter titles to be crowned the book of the decade. The Da Vinci Code sold a staggering 5.2m copies, spending 66 weeks (one year and three months) at the top of The Bookseller’s mass-market fiction chart.
Angels and Demons has taken seventh place, with Brown’s Deception Point and Digital Fortress (all Corgi) at 11th and 12th positions overall.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Bloomsbury) is the best selling Rowling title, taking second spot and the six other wizardry titles all retaining top ten places.
The two bestselling non-fiction books of the decade are Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything (Black Swan) and Robert Atkins’ New Diet Revolution (Vermilion) at 13th and 14th respectively.
A total of 12 “Richard and Judy” titles made the Top 100, compared with just one Booker Prize winner, Yann Martel’s The Life of Pi (Canongate).
Despite Katie Price’s phenomenal literary success, the former glamour model takes just the one position—85th—for her 2004 book Being Jordan (John Blake).
The decade has seen 47 ‘Noughty Millionaires’—titles that have sold more than one million copies over the past 10 years. Books included in this exclusive club are Peter Kay’s The Sound of Laughter (Arrow) and Jeremy Clarkson’s The World According to Clarkson (Penguin).
