Afghans, Barbecues & Chocolate Fish covers the history of Kiwi’s favourite food, food brands and customs, and includes celebrity panels and more than 20 recipes for favourites such as banana cake, feijoa jam, pavlova and ginger crunch.
From Anzac biscuits to whitebait, chocolate fish to the Sunday roast, Bluff oysters to the huhu grub – this book is a quirky celebration of our national cuisine. It provides the low-down on Kiwi culinary traditions such as Christmas, birthday parties and ‘ladies a plate’, along with a fun collection of facts, such as:
New Zealander’s eat 7 million servings of hot chips a week.
Crayfish can migrate many hundreds of kilometers. Crayfish originally tagged in Otago have been caught in Fiordland (a journey of 850 kilometres!)
Our beloved Jaffas were originally Australian.
In the 1980s political party McGillicuddy Serious put forward a policy of establishing chocolate fish as legal tender.
In 1926 Alfred Fagg opened his shop in Wellington and became the first roaster of coffee beans for espresso.

And a bonus are the colourful and appealing illustrations throughout. Lots of nostalgia.
