THE CRESCENT MOON
The Asian Face of Islam in New Zealand
Text Adrienne Jansen, Photographs Ans Westra
Asia New Zealand Foundation - $45

This is a special book. I spent a couple of hours last evening reading it from cover to cover and I came away feeling moved by the stories told and certainly with a much better understanding and appreciation of Islam and the various Asian cultures in New Zealand. For that I offer my thanks and congratulations to all who contributed to this important publication.

The 2006 census indicated that the Muslim population of New Zealand was between 35,000 and 40,000, ten years previously it had been less than 14,000. The majority of Muslims who have settled here are from one or other Asian country. The 37 men and women whose words and photographs appear in The Crescent Moon represent some of the many strands of Asian Muslim experience that have converged here.

The book will be launched at Pataka Museum & Gallery on Thursday 19 February and is available now from bookshops throughout New Zealand or online at http://www.nzbooksabroad.com/.
The publisher’s website is http://www.asianz.org.nz/
