The five artists have each received $50,000 and been honoured for their achievements at the ninth annual Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Awards at a glittering function at the Embassy theatre in Wellington last evening. Bookman Beattie was one of the judges.

The Awards were presented by Forsyth Barr, the long-term principal sponsor of the Arts Foundation and presenting sponsor of the Laureate Awards.

Annually, five exceptional New Zealand artists are awarded $50,000 each in recognition of their artistic achievements and as a challenge to continue working at high levels. Into its ninth year, the Arts Foundation has acknowledged forty-four Laureates, with donations totalling $1.87 million.

The recipients of the 2008 Laureate Awards are visual artist Shane Cotton, costume designer Ngila Dickson, actor George Henare, writer Lloyd Jones and baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes.
Arts Foundation of New Zealand chairman Ros Burdon said the Laureate Awards were awarded to artists whose careers are in full-flight.

The investment is to help the artists continue to achieve their goals. All of this year’s recipients are exceptional artists with success both behind and in front of them. We are delighted to once again join with Forsyth Barr and congratulate them all.”

The artists were chosen by a selection panel of distinguished peers and arts experts including Scilla Askew (Director, SOUNZ), Graham Beattie (former publisher), Jenny Harper (Director, Christchurch Art Gallery), Gabrielle Huria (Film Producer), Marilyn Kohlhase (advisor, Pacific arts) and Deirdre Tarrant (dance) without knowing they were under consideration.

The Laureate Award is a career award, not tagged to any particular project. Its recipients do not fill out forms, read fine print or make special applications.

As well as the $50,000 award, each Laureate received a specially-commissioned Terry Stringer statuette.

The Laureate Awards are made possible through income generated by the Arts Foundation’s $6 million Endowment Fund, which is managed by Forsyth Barr.

Ms Burdon said: “In these challenging economic times, it is important that we have such a highly-respected name in the financial services industry actively managing this Fund to ensure that artists both now and in the future will benefit.”
