The author, the niche and the wardrobe

Choosing what to wear to an awards ceremony is hard for any woman. It's worse when clothes have made you a finalist

Under the best of circumstances, the annual Man Booker Prize dinner gala is a nerve-wracking experience for any of the nominated authors. But as the only woman among this year's finalists, Linda Grant (left) approached last month's ceremony with an added measure of anxiety.
"I wasn't able to communicate with another short-listed woman to say, `What are you wearing?'" she says.

It wasn't until Grant met last year's Booker winner, Anne Enright, at an International Festival of Authors cocktail party in Toronto earlier this week that she finally encountered a knowing and sympathetic ear for her tale of dread.

"We had a conversation about how long it took us to find a dress to wear for the Booker," Grant says. "Each of us had basically shopped for three weeks, from the announcement of the short list, trying to find a dress to wear."
Grant ended up being given "a fantastic designer dress," so it worked out sartorially in the end, although the prize itself ended up in the hands of Aravind Adiga for The White Tiger.
