Fantastic Mr Fox
by Roald Dahl, read by Martin Jarvis
1hr unabridged,
Puffin,
£9.99

Of all his books, this was Dahl's favourite and, when you've heard Martin Jarvis reading it, you'll understand why. Usually when I hear MJ's voice I immediately think of Richmal Crompton's delinquent William Brown and Violet Elizabeth saying "I'll thcream and thcream 'till I'm thick", but for once I didn't. His voice slips fluidly between the trio of appalling farmers, Boggis, Bunce and Bean, and the heroic Mr Fox, a cross between Sir Percy Blakeney and 007. If you're part of the anti-foxhunting lobby, this may change your mind. Foxes like Dahl's always win - besides, they need a challenge.
