I like your suggestion very much, and in other, larger homes that I've lived in, have used it with great success. We are in the process of finding a new place to live--much larger--so I will probably use your method again.

How I envy you moving to a larger home. Recently we have downsized homes and so I ended up having to sell some books. Heart-breaking!

Every room except the bathroom has shelves stuffed with books in my house. It is tiny and shelves have been fitted in wherever they will fit. In spite of sharing a home for 13 years I still can't bring myself to blend book collections with my husband, we have our own areas so my children's book collection can't possibly mix in with his NZ history collection. Books are in vague genre order except the New Zealand children's books which I need to use for my work so need more formal order and so are separated into chapter books and picture books/non-fiction, by author. There are also of course overflow piles of all sorts of books by the bed, desk, kitchen table, coffee table. One of the favourite shelves is in the kitchen with the cookbooks plus any other food oriented novels etc.

The somewhat organised chaotic state of your various collections sounds appealing. Glad you have given your NZ children's books priority and special treatment.
NZ has a fine body of children's publishing and nothing gave me more pleasure in my corporate days than taking our titles to the annual Bologna Book Fair and showing them to the world.
