The majority of decisions on cultural resources are made in Wellington. Intentions may be good, but how could they reflect any but the narrowest of views. Cultures make culture not committees - but committees can stultify the process and do. Creative New Zealand imagines a culture then resources it Worse essential national cultural resources - Te Papa - in particular its national services division - and now the National Library are seen as part of the Wellington brand - absolutely positively they are - and their reach regional rather than national. Shows like the Monet are said to have limited venues - why always limited to Wellington - all of the main centres have larger populations and galleries of equal professional and physical standards - at least none of then had a leaking roof last week!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36622997.post-46430681094448194172009-02-24T11:43:00.000+13:002009-02-24T11:43:00.000+13:00I think you may be right about Wilson's purpose wi...I think you may be right about Wilson's purpose with his balanced piece. I lived for many years in both Auckland and Wellington and now live in Sydney for professional reasons. Looking back home for a distance I really wonder what the fuss is about. By world standards Auckland is a smallish city and Wellington a very small city indeed. Who actually gives a toss as to which is the cultural capital? Provided they both have lively and energetic art lives that are well supported and funded then what does it matter?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
