Kiwis are in for a new kind of reading experience when
BookShots hits bookstores tomorrow in what’s
possibly the greatest innovation
in book publishing since the mass market paperback.
A global roll-out, the series of short, fast,
high-impact stories is the brainchild of James Patterson, the world’s
best-known and biggest writer of all time. Each book is around 150 pages and
priced at just $7.99.
These short, hotly priced page-turners are designed to
compete with contemporary media, making reading more accessible, while also
meeting the increasing desire for instant, ‘on demand’ entertainment offered
through platforms like Lightbox and Netflix.

New BookShots titles will be released every month,
including standalones as well as exclusive additions to favourite Patterson
series like Alex Cross, Private and Women’s Murder Club.
A passionate literacy advocate, Patterson is
determined to excite more people into reading. He is the proud sponsor of the
World Book Day Award and he has donated millions in grants to independent
bookshops.
BookShots is a fresh approach to fiction that
complements all the books already out there and Patterson believes that
Bookshots will not only appeal to existing readers and inspire them to read
more, but it will also win over new readers.
In a recent feature interview, The New York Times reported
that Mr Patterson wants to sell books to people who he believes have abandoned
reading for television, video games, movies and social media. The paper also said that Patterson aimed to make books shorter, cheaper, more plot-driven and more widely available.
The first six titles to go on sale are: Cross Kill (the
new Alex Cross), Private Royals, Break Point,
The Hostage,
Black & Blue, and Zoo 2. The series of short books will
initially comprise thriller and romance titles, with some non-fiction coming
