The Barnes & Noble Samsung $179 Tablet Finally Arrives

Publishers Lunch

Barnes & Noble's newest tablet, saddled with the mouthful of a name Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 NOOK because of the company's partnership with Samsung, officially launched at a presentation held at BN's Union Square store Wednesday morning. The 7-inch tablet, which retails at $179 (after a $20 instant rebate) and weighs 9.74 ounces, includes "more than $200 in free content from the NOOK Store" such as Freakonomics, The Wanderer, and I Am Number Four; built-in 1.3-megapixel front- and 3-megapixel rear-facing cameras, and other features.

As we reported in June, BN has committed to selling a minimum of 1 million co-branded Samsung tablets "during the first twelve months". If that threshold isn't met by December 31 the term will extend to 15 months. Samsung has also "agreed to fund a marketing fund," and the overall commercial agreement between the two parties last for two years.

"The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 NOOK is the most advanced NOOK ever, delivering the great NOOK experience our customers have come to love, with the high-performance tablet features they've asked for," said Barnes & Noble ceo Michael Huseby in the announcement. "We invite reading and entertainment fans to visit their local Barnes & Noble store to experience the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 NOOK. Once they do, we're certain they will make this innovative device part of their daily routine."
