Cape Catley and the Takapuna Friends of the Library invite you to join Peter Calder
in launching Ruth Jones’ autobiography
An Improper Daughter

An Improper Daughter
is as full as clues as a detective novel but it is true. It’s the enthralling story of how, as a 10-day old baby, the author was left at a children’s home in England with a note: “Her name is Ruth”.

Later comes the first clue to her parentage, enough to make the still-young but determined child promise herself that one day she would find her mother. More serendipitous clues and a remarkable search, across the world and back, bring about a truly surprising ending.

The true story of a remarkable daughter’s search for her mother.

Ruth Jones, 81 this month, reminds us of our own childhoods and the huge chances that have taken place in social attitudes and family life. In spite of vicissitudes there is nothing “poor me” about Ruth. Her story is often funny and always candid and insightful.
