Publishing Intern Programme 2009

The Book Publishers Association of New Zealand and Whitireia Community Polytechnic invite applications for the 2008 Publishing Intern Programme.

The Intern Programme, funded jointly by participating publishers and Creative New Zealand, offers three six-month placements in the industry to graduates of the Whitireia Diploma in Publishing. It is designed to provide hands-on experience in publishing, so interns can develop their practical skills and make the transition into full-time work or freelance careers. They should not be expected to contribute, at least initially, at a 100% level and the publisher is expected to provide a learning experience for the intern.

This is a marvellous opportunity for publishers to engage talented and qualified publishing graduates and bring new blood into their businesses.

Participating publishers will provide substantive work for six months at an entry level salary appropriate to their business which must be at a minimum pro rata level of $30,000 per annum for which the publisher will receive a subsidy of $7,500. Internships are expected to begin in late January.

To be considered for the Intern Programme, please provide:

1) A clear job description. If you plan to use the intern in a range of jobs over the six-month period please provide job descriptions for all positions.

2) A short account of the benefits that you can offer the intern and that you expect to gain from participating in this scheme.

3) Agreement to the following conditions:
· the intern will be employed by the publisher on a temporary, fixed term contract of six months duration.
· the intern will be employed under the same terms and conditions as other staff
· the minimum salary will be the equivalent of $30,000 per annum ($15,000 for the six month period). The publisher may agree to pay more than this but the subsidy the publisher will receive is capped at $7500
· the intern’s salary is based on a maximum 40 hour week. Additional hours will be paid at the same hourly rate (subject to the Holiday Act 2003).
· the intern will be regarded as an employee of the publisher for the six month period and their engagement will be on the basis of an individual employment agreement pursuant to the Employment Relations Act 2000, the Holiday Act 2003 and all other relevant employment legislation.
· the publisher will deduct PAYE from the intern’s salary and will meet its statutory obligations regarding Kiwi Saver.
· the intern’s work will be reviewed after three months and the publisher will provide regular weekly or monthly opportunities for the intern to receive feedback on their performance. The publisher will provide the intern with formal feedback at the end of the six-month period
· formal feedback will be provided to BPANZ and Whitireia by both intern and publisher at the end of the six-month period. The intern will also provide formal feedback to Whitireia after 3 months.

BPANZ will make an interim payment of 50% of the subsidy 3 months following the publisher’s engagement of the intern with the balance payable by 31st July.
